The excitement in Johnson City reached a high as hometown hero, Landon Knack, celebrated the pinnacle of baseball success: a World Series title. For many in this close-knit Appalachian community, Knack’s victory is not only a testament to his own talent but also a moment of pride for an area that has followed his journey from high school baseball fields to the biggest stage in professional sports.
Knack, who grew up in Johnson City and starred as a pitcher at East Tennessee State University, has long been recognized as a standout talent. His powerful arm and precise command on the mound earned him attention as a young player and set him on a path that would ultimately lead to professional baseball. After a great career with the ETSU Buccaneers, where he became one of the most formidable pitchers in the Southern Conference, Knack was selected in the MLB Draft at No. 60 in the second-round and grinded his way through the minor leagues. Knack’s original MLB debut was on April 17, 2024.
Securing a roster spot in the MLB was a dream come true for Knack. Only a few could’ve predicted how quickly Knack would get an opportunity to pitch in the World Series. Knack stepped on the mound in the fourth inning and pitched scoreless innings until giving a home run to Austin Wells in the 6th inning. Knack becomes the first former Buccaneer to play in a World Series game since Atlee Hammaker pitched for the San Francisco Giants against the Oakland A’s in 1989.
Knack’s performance in the World Series not only gives him a spot in ETSU history but also serves as an inspiration for the next generation of ballplayers in East Tennessee. From his days with the Buccaneers to his unforgettable World Series appearance, Knack’s journey reminds us that talent and hard work can turn dreams into reality.
Knack finished off his first season at the major league level with 15 game appearances, pitching 69 innings with a 1.101 WHIP, sticking out 69 batters, and a World Series ring.
