The East Tennessee State University women’s basketball team wrapped up a three-game road stretch on Tuesday, facing off against Campbell inside the Pope Center.

The Buccaneers now 1-4 had looked to bounce back from a narrow 62-61 loss to Lipscomb last Friday, where junior forward Meghan Downing delivered a standout performance with her first double-double of the season. Downing tallied 12 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but unfortunately the Bucs fell just short once again. ETSU ended the night against Campell with a 58-51 loss.

Despite a loss the women were in the match the entire time, never letting their opponent outscore them by more than six in a quarter. Courtney Moore led the team in points and assists. Moore

scored 13 points on 40 percent from the field, ending the night with a total of three assists. 13 points of which 12 came from three point shots. Meghan Downing had another excellent night on the glass leading the team with 10 rebounds.

The efforts are there from ETSU and the team is playing excellent defense, but the turnovers are really causing issues. In this matchup ETSU turned the ball over 17 times compared to Campbell’s nine. Over the course of the new season the women in blue and gold have turned over the ball 89 times in comparison to their opponents 68. All of the easy points off of fastbreaks are detrimental to this team’s success. In this matchup Campbell scored eight fastbreak points compared to ETSU’s three.

The team chemistry from the women looks great this season, they just need to tighten up around the edges by capitalizing on second chance points and negating the turnovers.

The women will face off at home this Saturday against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles and hope to improve their record to 2-4 on the season. For more information on Buccaneer women’s basketball, follow @ETSU_WBB on X (Twitter) and Instagram, and visit ETSUBucs.com.
