Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed on the third Monday in January to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. His work promoted peaceful protests and defined the Civil Rights Movement. ETSU’s Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center has a plethora of events throughout January to celebrate Dr. King.

On Jan. 28, the Multicultural Center will host “King’s Beloved Community” in Room 272 of the D.P. Culp Student Center. The program will run from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. featuring the ETSU Gospel Choir, candle lighting and remarks from Multicultural Center Director Dr. Kevin Brooks.

Later in the Culp Ballroom, motivational speaker Ken E. Nwadike Jr. will share his story of homelessness to entrepreneurship and how inner strength and compassion played a role. His speech will take place at 5 p.m.

The Multicultural Center has already hosted the MLK Legacy Program, Annual Prayer Breakfast, Day of Service and cake-cutting celebration. The events have boasted attendees and speakers including President Brian Noland, Dr. Keith Johnson, vice president of equity and inclusion, and Bethanie Dye, Pride Center coordinator.

The Multicultural Center will begin hosting events in February celebrating Black History Month. On Feb. 3, Bettie Mae Fikes will be speaking in the Martha Street Culp Auditorium at 5 p.m.
