ETSU’s study abroad program is offering Healthcare as a Human Right, a course that will compare healthcare in Canada, the United States and Appalachia.

Healthcare as a Human Right is a seven-week online course. Each class will last one hour, and the class is being offered through a study abroad program to Canada. The course will also offer a trip to Canada. The times for the trip have yet to be finalized.

The syllabus states that the course will be designed to encourage students to participate in discussions based on social issues involving public health. The course will have students study differing styles of healthcare. It will have students dissect the issues and complications Appalachia faces with its healthcare, as well as looking at areas that are disproportionately impacted by poor healthcare such as rural and indigenous communities. The course will also compare the structures, access and outcomes of the American and Canadian healthcare systems and discuss the role of borders in healthcare. The course will discuss legal complications with healthcare as well.

Course enrollment for this semester ended on Jan. 15, however, there will be more opportunities to enroll next fall. These courses will feature similar subjects of study through Bucs Abroad.
