Bucs fall to Chattanooga (Contributed/ETSU Athletics)

The ETSU men’s basketball suffered from a weak night of shooting which caused a loss of 71-63 to in-state rival Chattanooga on Saturday.

The Buccaneers, who are typically lights out, entered the game shooting 48% on their home floor this season. Against the Mocs, they were held to just 33% (21-64) from the field and 32% (10-31) from three-point range.

The men in blue and gold started hot, building a 22-10 lead midway through the first half. However, Chattanooga capitalized on a late surge, scoring the final eight points of the period to lead 28-27 at halftime. The Mocs kept their foot on the gas and carried their momentum into the second half, as they scored the first five points and stretched their lead to 32-27.

The Bucs briefly saw some light when they cut the deficit to one when Quimari Peterson knocked down a clutch three-pointer, making it 45-44 with 10:36 left. Chattanooga responded with a strong 12-1 run, giving the Mocs their largest lead at 57-45 with 7:26 to play.

Peterson and Jaden Seymour held the offense on their shoulders, each scoring 22 points and combining for 14 of the team’s 21 made field goals. Karon Boyd added seven points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

This was a tough loss for the Bucs, but Peterson, and Seymour continue to prove they will have promising seasons. The duo of seniors have been standout forces over their careers with ETSU and this game was no exception.

With the loss, ETSU who hasn’t beat Chattanooga at home since Jan. 25, 2020  dropped to 12-9 overall.
