The East Tennessee State University women’s basketball team fell short in overtime against UNC Greensboro, 61-56, on Saturday at Freedom Hall.
Meghan Downing put on a standout performance, scoring 18 points while shooting over 58% from the field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. She added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season and five blocks. Her 97 career swats tie her for sixth all-time in ETSU history, just two away from breaking the program’s single-season block record.
Courtney Moore led ETSU with 19 points, shooting 50% from three. Braylyn Milton got on the board with 11 points and five boards, but the rest of the team combined for just a total of eight points.
Defense was a huge factor early on, as ETSU held a tight 23-22 lead at halftime. Neither team found a rhythm in the third quarter. As the fourth quarter approached, the game was all tied up at 31. In the fourth, both teams found their footing with their possessions, each putting up 20 points, the most in a quarter for each team.
Moore sent the game to overtime after she buried a deep three at the buzzer. ETSU had plenty of momentum into overtime, with Downing hitting a successful triple and scoring inside to put the Bucs up five. But the offense ran out of gas, and UNCG capitalized, tying the game with a three before sealing the win at the free-throw line.
ETSU heads on the road for the last time in the regular season, taking on Samford on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. For more information, visit @ETSU_WBB on X or visit ETSUBucs.com.
