The Bucs traveled to Blacksburg this week to take on Virginia Tech for their 60th all-time matchup. The ETSU Buccaneers came up just short in a back-and-forth contest, falling 8-6 on Tuesday night. Despite strong individual performances, the Bucs couldn’t overcome the Hokies offense.
ETSU’s offense was led by freshman Axel Melendez, who had a standout night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, and an RBI. Cooper Torres and Tristan Curless also added power to the lineup, each hitting home runs and driving in two runs apiece. Grant Gallagher contributed with a two-hit performance, including a home run and an RBI.
The Hokies’ offense was led by senior Sam Tackett, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while David McCann came up with two doubles and drove in two RBIs. Clay Grady added a 3-RBI performance.
Early on ETSU seemed to have rhythm, scoring three runs in the first inning while holding Virginia Tech to zero. Although in the second inning Virginia Tech capitalized on the Bucs early mound struggles, building momentum to secure the win.
Despite the Buccaneers drilling four homeruns, the efforts were not great enough to take down the Hokies. Despite the loss, this matchup highlights ETSU’s powerful offense. The men in blue and gold have been electric at the plate so far this season. They will hope to ride the offense to victory in their next game at Thomas Stadium against the Miami Redhawks.
