The Johnson City Recovery Center offers a safe and welcoming environment for all people on their recovery journeys or seeking to begin a journey to recovery. There is always a certified peer recovery support specialist in the center during their hours, and all services provided by the center are free. The JCRC is open Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m. until 8:30 p.m.
“We believe in the power of peer recovery support,” said Dottie Greene, executive director of the Johnson City Recovery Center. “So everybody that works here is a person with lived experience with addiction and recovery. That’s from our board members and me all the way down to our peer staff. We also believe that recovery is not only possible, but it is likely when given all the necessary recovery support for folks.”
The JCRC believes there are many different paths to recovery and offers several options so people are able to find something that will work best for them.
They have 20 different mutual aid groups that meet every week. Some of these options include more traditional 12-step groups, SMART recovery groups, Wellbriety groups and groups for families and/or friends. They also have group activities such as yoga and meditation.
The center also provides support options for individuals. Some of these options include one-on-one individualized recovery support and telephone recovery support to check in and talk throughout the week.
The staff also has an emotional support dog, everyone’s favorite support specialist.
They provide several resources at the center or can help connect people with other resources in the community to help support their recovery journeys. Within the center, they offer financial fundamentals classes to teach people about money management basics and to help with creating a budget and developing a path to clear up any existing credit problems. The center also has a computer lab for job searching or checking emails.
Their resource navigation service can help connect people with community resources, including recovery housing, treatment services, food resources and more. They have a partnership with Caring Workplaces to help connect people to employment opportunities while offering guidance from someone with specialized experience for supporting people with Substance Use Disorders throughout the process.
Every month, they offer at least one social event. This is typically a game night with different board and card games, along with food and prizes. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the JCRC since they are a nonprofit and depend on fundraising and grants to continue operating.
“I think a lot of times there’s a myth that once an addict, always an addict, and that people don’t get better. But they do get better. I’m living proof,” said Greene. “Sometimes it might take multiple attempts, but if we encourage and support folks to keep trying and continue to be welcoming and supportive, they just might land on both feet.”
