The Johnson City Hiking Club has been a staple in the local outdoor community since its founding in the late 1980s. Created by Sam Lloyd, a passionate outdoor enthusiast who moved to the area. The club was created from Lloyd’s love for hiking and a desire to bring together others who shared that passion. At the time, there was no other hiking group in Johnson City, making the club’s creation an important milestone for the community. Over the years, the club has grown and evolved, with Lloyd leading the charge until his passing. Today, the club is under the direction of Joel Zabel. He has been in charge for nearly the last decade.

Membership in the club has fluctuated over time, with about 50 active members always being present. The club has a very diverse and unique group of members, which spans many different ages and backgrounds.  The club has members that range from Milligan University students to 79-year-olds with years of hiking experience to indivuals who have never set foot on a trail.

Although the Johnson City Hiking Club accepts members of all skill levels, they frequently join forces with two other nearby clubs; the Mid-Appalachian Hiking Club and the Old Timers Hiking Club. Between the trio of clubs there are hikes for hikers of all skill levels in the region.

For those new to the area or to hiking in general, the club offers a friendly environment and expert advice on where to start. If you’re unsure of where to start, a quick visit to jchikers.weebly.com or a call to the club leader can help you find the right hike for your experience level and goals. So whether you’re an experienced hiker or just starting out, the Johnson City Hiking Club is the perfect place to explore new trails and deepen your love for the great outdoors.
