Get ready to be inspired and moved, ETSU!

ETSU’s Amalgam Dance Company is preparing to take center stage with their spring showcase, Dream Chasers, on Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 P.M. in the Martin Center’s Grand Hall. Admission is free, and all students, faculty and community members are invited to attend.

Founded in 2022 by student Katie Green, Amalgam was created to be “a safe space for students to continue dancing throughout our time in college,” said sophomore Gracee DeJarnette, who has been with the company for two years. “Amalgam has been a complete blessing, giving me both friendships and a creative outlet.”

This year’s showcase is the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of planning and preparation. Gracie explained that the “preparations for this showcase began last summer when the choreographers were determined. “She continued by explaining that they “held auditions early in the fall semester.” Once the dancing group of performers was determined, they began the work on choreography for the shows the group would be doing in the coming year. The group meets on Sundays and occasionally Saturdays to rehearse.

The showcase includes a wide range of dance styles, all choreographed by company members. “The pieces that are featured in this showcase… include a variety of different styles such as tap, jazz, contemporary and more!” Gracee described the performance as a team effort: “This show was mainly arranged by Katie Green, our choreographers, our faculty advisor Cara Harker, and the Department of Theatre and Dance.”

When asked how students can support Amalgam, Gracee was clear: “Come to our showcase! This is a wonderful opportunity to support fellow students and the arts. Our showcase is free of charge, so all you need to do is show up!”

“I will continue to participate in this group moving forward,” Gracee emphasized. When talking about what Amalgam meant to her, she stated that it “has become [her] home away from home, and [she] couldn’t be more grateful for it.”
