Over the busy weekend, the ETSU softball team locked in on Sunday afternoon. In a three-game stand, taking on a conference foe, the Wofford Terriers. The traveling Bucs were able to tame the home opponents, 2-0 in seven innings in the final game. To salvage a below-average season, the struggling, rebuilding Buccaneers captured an important morale-boosting victory. The first two of three scheduled games did not end in the Bucs’ favor, dropping game one 4-0 and game two, 3-1. However, the third game would prove to be a great opportunity for the Bucs.
Entering the last game with a 15-33 record, the Bucs softball team knew that another win in conference would only lead to greener pastures in the future. As the game teed off, the offense would take a slow-burning backseat. Throughout six innings, the score remained at zero. In part to ETSU’s strong pitching performance from senior, Sara Muir (Marion County, Tenn.), the Bucs were able to complete a career-defining shutout against the Terriers.
On the other side of the mound, the Bucs were finally able to catch fire, opening the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Senior infielder, Cameron Young (Knoxville, Tenn.), and centerfield sophomore Gracen Hinson (Thomasville, Ga.) would both capture game-defining singles. The tough defense, partnered with the just-in-time offense, would prove to be the success plan needed to catapult the Buccaneers over the Terriers.
Exiting the game with a 16-33 record, Bucs softball sits in seventh place in Southern Conference play, just ahead of the Furman Paladins. With a three-game home stand to finish out the season, the Buccaneers are ready to fight on against arch-rival, the Chattanooga Mocs. The games scheduled against the Mocs are set for next weekend, May 3 and 4. The Buccaneers will be looking to end their season on a high note.
