The ETSU’s men’s soccer team dropped its season opener Thursday night, falling 2-0 on the road to Emory & Henry in a hard-fought match. The game was determined by an early penalty and a devastating red card late in the match.

The Wasps scored in the 13th minute when Jean-Charles Eyidi was clipped inside the box. This set up a penalty kick for Samuel Ulrich Da Silva, who scored both of Emory & Henry’s two goals during this match. Despite several fantastic saves from ETSU’s freshman goalie Emil Holmberg, the Buccaneers struggled to find a rhythm offensively, attempting only five total shots in comparison to the Wasps’ 12.

In the 64th minute, ETSU junior Nicola Brocca was red-carded, leaving the Buccaneers down one of their starters and key defensive players. They were forced to reshuffle defensively and there were gaps left along their back line that the Wasps took advantage of. Ulrich Da Silva scored his second goal of the night shortly afterward.

Despite the loss, there were positives for the Buccaneers to build on. Defensively, the team held firm for long stretches, limiting what Emory & Henry could do. Several underclassmen also logged meaningful minutes, gaining experience that should serve this team well going into the rest of the season.

Moving forward, ETSU will want to create more consistent attacking chances and avoid the costly errors that shifted the momentum of their game in the final third. Generating pressure and maintaining composure in physical situations should remain points of emphasis as the season progresses. With their talented roster this season, the Bucs shouldn’t find themselves discouraged by the early loss and instead use it as fuel to show up and show out for the rest of their season.
