The most well-documented supernatural story in American history occurred in Tennessee. This prolific supernatural tale is that of the haunting of the Bell family by the Bell Witch. Many people know this tale due to the fact that there is a major motion picture based on it, and well-known supernatural enthusiasts have tried to explain what happened to the Bell family and why. So let’s dig in.
This story begins in 1804, when the Bell family moved from North Carolina to Tennessee. John Bell, the father, bought over 300 acres of farmland where his family would live peacefully until the summer of 1817. Out of nowhere, the family started to experience what many consider a haunting.
At first, the instances were small but strange nonetheless. The Bell family would all begin to see and hear different entities that had no explanation. After some time, the different sights and sounds the family experienced were brought to a whole new level when a woman’s voice began to speak to each member of the family. On one occasion, the voice even vowed to kill John Bell. Soon, the voice grew so loud it could be heard in every room of the Bell house. Word spread of this haunting throughout the area, and hundreds of people would stay on the family’s property in hopes that they would be able to witness one of these incidents.
Though every member of the family was subjected to the torture of the Bell Witch, John Bell and his daughter Betsy Bell had the worst of it. On multiple different occasions, it was reported that Betsy would be beaten into unconsciousness by this entity. After three years of enduring this nonstop terror, the torment finally came to an end when John Bell was found dead with a vile next to him with an unknown black liquid inside of it.
As his death was investigated, the authorities concluded that the supernatural being that haunted the family had killed John Bell. This makes Tennessee the only state to ever conclude a cause of death to be due to a supernatural force.
It is said that once the Bell Witch kept the vow of ending John Bell’s life, it escaped into a nearby cave, which is still reported to be extremely haunted. This cave is called the Bell Witch Cave and is open to visitors curious about this chilling story.
Although this is such a well-documented case, there are still many unanswered questions. Many believe that the supernatural being was the spirit of Kate Batts, a neighbor of the family, and directly targeted John Bell because he reportedly cheated her out of a land deal. But this leaves the question of why the spirit of Kate Batt targeted Betsy Bell, who was just a child at the time.
What do you think about all of this? Was it a haunting, something much simpler, or something even worse?
