On October 18, at the Ballad Health Athletic Center, the Bands of America East Tennessee Regional Championship returned to ETSU. Bringing together 22 elite high school marching bands from across the country, this event was an all-day affair full of captivating performances from some of the best programs in the marching arts.

Along with these creative and captivating performances, ETSU’s very own Marching Bucs also took part in the field to present their show “Rhythms of Rio.” The Marching Bucs once again made a lasting impression on students, parents and directors as they brought their colorful celebration to the Mini-Dome.

“The most rewarding part of the BOA hosting experience for me is getting to see the Marching Bucs perform to an excited and enthusiastic audience,” stated Timothy Loman, Assistant Director of Athletic Bands. “The high school students and their parents know how much work and dedication it takes to be in a marching band, so they are always a supportive and energetic crowd.”

With the added excitement of performing in front of an audience filled with talented musicians and directors, the Marching Bucs took their preparation to the next level, ensuring their performance showcased the precision, pride, and passion that define the program.

“Performing for the BOA crowd is always a strong motivator for our students, we get to show off on our home turf,” stated Loman. “The rehearsals leading up to BOA were focused on refining small details in the show.”

The performance itself was met with overwhelming praise from both BOA officials and attendees, something that filled the staff and students with immense fulfillment and validated the countless hours of rehearsal and dedication that led up to the event.

“The BOA staff was exceedingly complimentary of ETSU’s performance on Saturday, and that is something that made the marching band staff very proud,” stated Loman. “We are even more proud of the praise received about our students in their role working the event. The event makes for a long day, but we have heard nothing but positive feedback from high school directors and attendees.”

This year’s performance not only highlighted the musical excellence of the Marching Bucs but also elevated the visibility of the university.

“This performance is one of our most important performances of the year,” stated Loman. “We not only raised the visibility and reputation of the ETSU Music Department, we raised the visibility and reputation of the university as a whole to an audience of potential students and the regional community.”

The Bands of America Regional Championship continues to serve as a hallmark of pride for the ETSU Marching Bucs, demonstrating the group’s commitment to artistry, professionalism, and community engagement both on and off the field.
