When fall settles in Johnson City, it’s not another opponent that challenges ETSU softball– it’s themselves. The annual Navy vs. Gold series held at Betty Basler Field pits the Buccaneers against each other in a fierce intrasquad battle that blends competition and fun.
The series took place Oct. 29 – 31. The team is split into two squads– Navy and Gold– each with their own leadership and identity. Though technically the games are scrimmages, they are fast, intense and full of bragging rights. It’s a chance for the athletes to show what they’ve learned in the offseason and prove they are ready for spring. It is also a way to evaluate every position under game conditions, giving the coaching staff a way to see how their players react under pressure. Every position is up for grabs, and the format allows players to showcase what they can bring to the game.
This fall’s matchups featured a strong mix of returners and newcomers. Veterans acted as anchors for the defense and set the tone with leadership. Freshmen bring energy and hustle. The biggest takeaway isn’t even who wins the series– it’s about the culture it builds. The Navy vs. Gold games push teammates to compete hard while maintaining that signature camaraderie and sportsmanship that defines ETSU softball. When the final out is made, the players return to the same dugout stronger, sharper and more unified.
It also gives the fans a chance to see the team’s identity, and how they will be shaping up for the season. The Navy vs. Gold series has always been a fan favorite– students, alumni and families often fill the stands to watch the unique event. The dugouts get loud and every big play draws a reaction from the devoted fans. It reminds everyone why ETSU is unique and a standout program.
For the Bucs, these games are so much more than just scrimmages. They’re the foundation for everything that comes next. When the regular season begins, the lessons learned at the Navy vs. Gold series will stay with them for the rest of the season, and so will the bragging rights in the locker room.
