JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The ETSU women’s basketball team came within an eyelash of claiming an a home win on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the Brooks Gymnasium, where they hosted the Kennesaw State Owls.
The first half started slow for ETSU, falling to the Owl’s early lead in the first quarter. The Bucs were not able to find their momentum as fast as they would have liked. The second quarter was much of the same, with the Owls carrying a slim one point lead into halftime.
The third quarter was where ETSU fell short. Coming out of the halftime huddle, the Bucs were outscored 11-20, shooting 3/12 FG and 1/4 from behind the arc. Falling to a 10-point deficit before the fourth quarter started, the Bucs could have easily lost their momentum. Instead, they owned the fourth quarter.
The Buccaneers went on to outscore Kennesaw state 23-14 throughout the fourth quarter, drawing fouls and scoring on 11 of those 12 free throw opportunities. Players such as Lucy Hood and SaBreya Monsanto played key roles offensively, finishing when it mattered the most for the Bucs. The final minutes of the game seemed to last for thirty, with the lead switching and remaining just out of the Buccaneer’s reach as the buzzer sounded to end the fourth. The final score was 63-64 in favor of the Owls.
Despite the third quarter struggles from the Buccaneers, they showed improvement from their last matchup. They brought 28 points off the bench, and were able to force turnovers and score 23 points off of them. Their defense held the Owls to their lowest percentages of the night in the second half, and the way they rallied in the fourth quarter shows how determined they were to finish the game strong, despite what the outcome may have been.
The Buccaneers will be taking on Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tennessee on Thursday, Nov. 20. For more information visit etsubucs.com and click on the sports tab.
