This week, the Center for Global Education, the Education Abroad Office and the International Enrollment and Services Office put on International Education Week. It was also a joint effort between the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State. The week, Nov. 17-21, was centered around showcasing the globalization efforts of ETSU and opportunities for students.
Brittany Mitchell, director of global partnerships for Education Abroad and Global Partnerships, shared the details of the week.
All week, there was a diverse lineup of events from photo contests to global dance classes. A panel of students from Global Year: Scotland presented on their community-engaged learning opportunities, and study abroad ambassadors tabled to share their experiences.
Students who have previously studied abroad were given the opportunity to learn how to frame their global experiences for professional development on Thursday, Nov. 20.
“That is to help students who have studied abroad better understand their experience, if they want to share about it in an interview or on a resume,” Mitchell said. “Instead of just saying, we went and we did this cool thing.”
Another event Mitchell highlighted was Carson Medley’s presentation as the director of prestigious awards and nationally competitive scholarships.
“People may not know what is available to them. It is a chance at free money,” Mitchell said. “He is wonderful at looking at your skill set and highlighting different aspects of it that make you more competitive as a candidate for scholarships.”
An opportunity for students to gain experience abroad can be found in internships in Mumbai and Lisbon, Portugal. A scholarship is available that covers most of the cost.
For Mitchell, the week was all about educating students about transformative study abroad opportunities.
“It is an awareness week to share opportunities with students about the life-changing experience they can have, that they may not otherwise get to be a part of,” Mitchell said.
