The Innovation Commons and the Department of Art and Design are closing out the semester with a figure drawing workshop Friday from 3-6 p.m. in Ball Hall’s third-floor drawing studio. The session will have a live model, and students will be provided with charcoal, supplies and paper. Registration for the event is still open and is available through the QR code on the event flyer.

Ariel Adams, the Innovation Commons communications specialist, explained that the workshop is part of an ongoing partnership with Ball Hall to introduce students to resources across campus. Earlier workshops included sewing, soldering and bookbinding, along with many others. The main objective is to provide platforms for students to pursue interests in whatever creative or technical areas they’re curious about.

The Innovation Commons, located on the second floor of the library, serves as an open-access makerspace where any ETSU student can learn tools and technology without prior experience.

“Students don’t have to have any prior knowledge before they walk in,” Adams said. “We’re here to help them get started.”

Workshop attendance has grown steadily over the last three semesters since the workshops first started. Many events now fill up completely, drawing waitlists. Student feedback has always been positive, and Adams said practical, hands-on sessions remain the most requested.

Adams hopes students continue to see the Commons as a place to try new things.

“Whether it’s drawing, sewing, soldering or learning a new program, we want students to discover something they wouldn’t have tried otherwise,” she said.

Workshops will continue next semester, and the Commons remains open to all ETSU students interested in exploring the space.
