On March 23, ETSU Student Activities and Organizations will partner with the Literature and Language Department, hosting an event of learning, creativity and appreciation. In honor of Women’s History Month, the event seeks to amplify women’s voices and work both on campus and beyond.
The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Ballroom. Professors from the Literature and Language Department will share their work. Professor Theresa McGarry, for example, will focus on a small group of women in Asia and their preservation of the Nüshu language.
In regard to McGarry’s research, Nathnael Tadesse, assistant director of Student Activities and Organizations, said how important it is to “recognize, reflect and celebrate” both the women McGarry’s research highlights and the women on campus doing valuable work like McGarry.
Professor Chelsea Wessels will also give a talk examining the role of women in film throughout history, exploring the way women have been depicted in film and also shaped the industry.
Lastly, Professor Martha Michieka will examine poetry and short stories from East Africa.
“She’ll examine how these women share their experiences through their writings,” Tadesse said.
The event expands beyond learning, however, to also be a time of celebration and fun.
“There will be dancing, singing and sharing poetry,” Tadesse said. “We have a combination of different genres and perspectives of women, as well as different cultures represented.”
The event also welcomes two student organizations to participate in the festivities: Women of Knowledge and Excellence and the South Asian Student Association will share their perspectives and experiences.
“We’re not just celebrating the month, we’re celebrating the women around us and the way they contribute to our lives,” Tadesse said. “This provides students with the opportunity to learn things they wouldn’t necessarily be able to in the classroom. It’s an opportunity to celebrate, learn and recognize the individuals we have here on campus.”
Coming together to celebrate Women’s History Month promises to be an event of education and fun, providing the campus community with a chance to recognize the women of the university and of their own lives.
Student Activities and Organizations follows the National Heritage Month Calendar. Next month, more events are on the horizon, including the Unity Fest Showcase on April 8. More information about the Women’s History Month event and other upcoming celebrations can be found on the ETSU calendar.
