On Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11, the ETSU baseball team played against the Belmont Bruins in a 3-game series. These two teams haven’t played against each other since March of 2012, and both were looking to add a weekend of wins to their belt.
The Friday game began at 4 P.M. in Nashville, Tenn. While neither team scored in the first two innings, ETSU scored 4 runs in the third, boosting them into the lead. With another 2 runs in the 4th inning, ETSU led with 6-0. Belmont scored 3 runs before the game ended, but it still wasn’t enough to catch up to the Buccaneers. With a final score of 6-3, ETSU takes the first game of the weekend series.
The first Saturday game started at 1 P.M., and the Buccaneers were still using their momentum from the night before. Scoring near the end of the first inning and twice more in the third, ETSU was once again in the lead. The next 2 innings went slowly with neither team scoring, but the Buccaneers came back swinging in the 6th inning with 3 more points, and another 2 in the 7th inning. With a score of 8-0, Belmont knew they had to start scoring to have a chance of taking the game. With only 4 points scored by the Bruins in the 7th inning, ETSU won the second game against Belmont.
The second Saturday game began at 4 P.M., shortly after the previous game concluded. With only one game left before the weekend is over, both teams were itching for a win. Belmont went into an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning, but a strong home run by ETSU player Joey Little tied the game. The Bruins retaliated by scoring 4 runs in the next two innings, gaining the lead once again. No one was able to score again until the 6th inning, and the Buccaneers were not able to catch up. Belmont won the final game of the series with a score of 10-8.
The Buccaneers will travel to Athens, Georgia, for the next game against the University of Georgia Bulldogs. This game will be on Tuesday, April 14, at 3 P.M., and will be streamed on the SEC Network Plus. Make sure to cheer on the Buccaneers as they compete against one of their most difficult opponents yet.
