On April 11th, the Buccaneers hosted the Furman Paladins women’s tennis program in a competitive match that decided the SoCon regular season champions between the two undefeated conference teams.
Furman is ranked No. 71 nationally and stayed undefeated in conference play with the win. ETSU’s record landed at 6-1 in conference play with the loss and 13-7 in the regular season, and the Bucs have grabbed the 2 seed heading into the tournament, while Furman took the 1 seed.
The Bucs put up a fight and took one doubles match, but Furman secured the doubles point. ETSU’s Julia Millan and Ksenija Rage were the duo to take a win in the doubles, showcasing consistent baseline play and solid serving that gave them the 6-2 win.
ETSU’s only point, however, came in the form of a singles match. Freshman Mariangel Estrella earned the lone point for the Buccaneers in a three-set comeback (4-6, 6-0, 6-2). Estrella completely flipped the momentum of the match after dropping the first set, and she dominated the final two. Her victory prevented the Bucs from being shut out by the Paladins.
The Bucs will play next in the SoCon Women’s Tennis Tournament, from April 16 to April 18. For more information, go to etsubucs.com and navigate to the women’s tennis tab.
