The ETSU men’s soccer team traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, Aug. 20 to play against Queens University of Charlotte for their first game of the season. This is the first time these two teams have played against each other since ETSU left the ASUN Conference in 2014. Not only that, but it is the first official match between these two men’s soccer teams.

For the first 45 minutes of the match, neither team was having luck getting a goal. Foul after foul, block after block, these two teams were stuck in a stalemate the entire first period. The second period started, and both teams knew they had to kick it into high gear in order to win the match. After another 40 minutes of continuous fouls, unsuccessful kicks, and substitutions, it was starting to look like this match was going to end in a tie.

With only six minutes left on the clock, ETSU defender Frank Manrod goes for a goal, and with an assist from Elliot Edwards, gets the first goal of the game. Not only did this goal give ETSU the win over Queens by the end of the night, but it was also the freshman’s first career goal in collegiate soccer.

The ETSU men’s soccer team fell at Clemson 2-0 Aug. 23 and will be back in action on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. against USC Upstate in their home turf of Johnson City. These two teams have not played each other since August 2024, where ETSU lost against them for the first time after 4 consecutive wins. Be sure to support the Buccaneers in their first home game of the season, especially as they enter the match with victory on their mind.
