Throughout October, ETSU is celebrating Exercise is Medicine® Month by hosting a campus-wide Exercise is Medicine Walking Challenge.
This year, the competition takes place on an app created by Stephen Hendrix in the Department of Computing that lets participants log their steps and see their standing on the leaderboard.
ETSU faculty, staff and students can compete as a team or individually. Prizes will be awarded to the top steppers in both categories at the end of the month. Additionally, the whole ETSU community will be competing against other universities.
According to Shaina Reins, coordinator of Fitness and Marketing in the Department of Campus Recreation, the challenge supports ETSU’s goal to “promote physical activity as an important part of a healthy lifestyle and encourage students, faculty and staff to make movement a regular part of their daily lives.”
The challenge is not exclusive to walking; the app converts other types of physical activity into steps. The challenge is also accessible to people with different ability levels, including wheelchair users.
The challenge has been a huge success since it launched, with over two million steps being recorded by 255 participants on October 1 but there is still plenty of time to get involved.
