Hollywood does not know Dr. Sindi’s story of the plight of his Kurdish people in Iraq. I seriously doubt many of them are listening to Dr. Sindi because his story paints an immediate reason for the United Sates to liberate Iraq.
Dr. Sindi is a Kurdish doctor in Northern Iraq who is supporting the United States in its fight to disarm Hussein. Sindi has a quiet eloquence about him. An eloquence that comes from heartache and will to survive. But, if Sean Penn or Sheryl Crow had their way, Dr. Sindi’s people would remain in bondage.
You may say Mr. Penn and Ms. Crow simply do not want innocent lives lost in battle. I agree, I do not want lives lost, but every minute that Saddam is in power we are allowing him to brutalize innocent people.
While I was listening to Dr. Sindi speak, I thought here is yet another piece of evidence to end Hussein’s immoral reign in Iraq.
Why do personalities such as Crow and Penn feel as if they have to attack President Bush and our U.S. military?
Celebrities could cause great harm or help the United States during wartime.
What if Sheryl Crow had worn a different message across her shirt? One that said: “Free the Kurds.” (If some of you do not know about the shirt incident, Crow wore a shirt protesting the war in a recent concert.)
What if Penn, Belafonte, Clooney and Crow took up the cause to free the Kurds under Hussein but even supported a “Kurdish State?”
Dr. Sindi pointed to Kurds scattered over the Middle East with 20 million living in Turkey and living there as a people without rights. 20 million is hardly a minority.
If anyone of the personalities just named would do that, I imagine it would draw more press than opposing a conflict about independence.
We live in freedom. Why not spread the same to the Kurdish peoples?
Some may say that it’s just about the oil. Really. Do you not think if Bush wanted the oil that strongly, that he would have taken it a long time ago? If you read David Frum’s new book on Bush, The Right Man you’ll quickly find out that the president is definitely in charge of what happens. Why involve the United Nations and Hans Blix?
Take up the cause of liberating the Kurds of Northern Iraq.
Hollywood should support Dr. Sindi in his battle for a democratic and pluralistic Iraq. But I do not know if that will happen because Dr. Sindi is a man of action, he does not have to time to sit in a plush home sipping champagne, he must save his people.
