ETSU’s women’s basketball team snapped a six-game winless streak on the road with a 70-65 victory at Wofford Monday night.
Wofford (4-14, 1-8) took a 65-64 lead on a Brie Bradshaw free throw with two minutes to play. Just four seconds later, ETSU (6-12, 3-6 SoCon) gained a one-point advantage as Misty Copas sank a layup.
The Lady Terriers missed a pair of 3-pointers during their two ensuing possessions, and sent Tiffani Mayes to the line with 17 seconds remaining in an attempt to regain the ball. Mayes converted both free throws for a 68-65 lead. Kiya Verdell hit two free throws with one second left to give ETSU its 70-65 final margin.
The lead changed hands 19 times in the course of the exciting contest, and neither team saw an advantage of more than seven points. The Lady Bucs had a 37-35 halftime advantage.
Verdell led East Tennessee State by tallying her second double-double of the season. She scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the contest. Mayes added 11 points, three blocks and seven boards, while Lauren Trantham had eight points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. The Lady Bucs also grabbed 14 steals Mayes and Adrienne Walker had three each.
ETSU continues its road trip on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game at league leading Chattanooga. Chattanooga (15-3, 8-1) lost to Georgia Southern, 66-59.
