East Tennessee State junior Kiya Verdell has been selected the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Player-of- the-Week for January 28.
Verdell led the Lady Bucs to two conference wins last week. She started the week with a career-high 28 points, including the game-winning basket, in a 66-64 win over Davidson on Saturday. Verdell also tallied a career-high seven blocked shots in the victory over the Wildcats, while shooting 55.6 percent (11-of-21) from the floor and 55.6 (5-of-9) from 3-point range. Verdell followed the performance with her second double-double of the season (17 points and 11 rebounds) in a 70-65 win at Wofford on Monday.
On the week, Verdell averaged 22.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. She also added seven blocks and two steals with only two turnovers. For the season Verdell ranks 13th among the SoCon’s leaders in scoring average (11.8 ppg), 8th in rebounding (6.8), 13th in assists (2.72), 2nd in steals (2.50), and 3rd in blocked shots (1.33)
ETSU is currently 6-12 overall and 3-6 in the SoCon. The Lady Bucs travel to Chattanooga on Saturday to take on the league-leading Lady Mocs (15-3, 8-1), before returning home on Monday, Feb. 3 to face Georgia Southern (12-6, 6-3). Tip-off versus Georgia Southern is set for 7 p.m.
