East Tennessee State’s Jerald Fields and Brad Yewer were both awarded Southern Conference honors for their efforts over the past week.
* Fields averaged 26.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds and added a blocked shot and five steals to earn SoCon Player-of-the-Week honors.
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound junior forward, converted 19-of-29 field goal attempts (65.5 percent) and made 13-of-16 free throws on the week.
On the season, Fields, a preseason All-SoCon selection, is second on the team in scoring with 12.5 ppg and rebounding with 6.1 rpg. He is shooting a team-best 55 percent from the floor for the season and is second on the team in blocks with 31 this year.
* Yewer was named SoCon Athlete-of-the-Week after his performances at the Rod McCravy Memorial track meet at the University of Kentucky.
The Newbury, Eng-land, native had a sixth-place finish in the mile. His time of 4:08.92 leads the conference-ranking list by almost two seconds. Yewer followed that performance by placing seventh in the 3000-meters, with a time of 8:27.49, which is a little over one second slower than the conference leading time. Both times were lifetime bests for the sophomore.
“Hard work always results in good performances,” Buccaneer head coach Dave Walker said. “Brad has been working exceptionally hard and stayed injury free.
