Dear Editor,
This is in response to Amy Gordon’s response to my letter advocating a women’s right to choose.
I read the letter in disbelief as my character was attacked again and again.
My name was personally referenced 5 times during the letter. She asserted that I called childbirth and parenting “horrible”. I was described as being ignorant of our current time period, not being serious, being ignorant of adoption and being uncaring.
The letter I wrote was nowhere near as exciting as the response that it received.
My letter was simply an argument in support of abortion rights.
I think that it is interesting that the response was a character assassination instead of a rebuttal of the issues.
Gordon may never have an abortion. That is her right.
No one is arguing that she must have an abortion.
Gordon may find the act to be morally repulsive and that is also her right.
However, if we are going to live in a country that values separation of church and state we can not press our own moral beliefs on others through the law.
America should not strive to be a theocracy like Iran or the Taliban’s Afghanistan but should instead respect individual rights.
