The Scholarship Office announces the first James H. Quillen Scholarships will be awarded for the fall 2005 semester.
As a final bequest, Quillen arranged for the establishment of a scholarship endowment to be of assistance to students from the First Congressional District of Tennessee.
Specifically, he requested that proceeds from this endowment be used to fund scholarships for students who may not have otherwise been able to attend college because of financial constraints.
The scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $4,000 per academic year.
Applicants must be full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are residents of Carter, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Sevier, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties in Tennessee.
The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of scholastic endeavors, school and community leadership, volunteer services and other extracurricular activities.
Applicants must have demonstrated financial need as determined through Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Entering freshmen must have a minimum of a 2.5 grade point average and at least score a 19 on the ACT (900 SAT).
Entering transfer applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
Currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
The scholarships will be awarded by the James H. Quillen Scholarshp Selection Committee.
Application deadline is March 1.
