Some ETSU students are not feeling the love on Valentine’s Day.
Students have their reasons why they don’t care for Valentine’s Day anymore – or in some cases why they never have.
One of the most common reasons why students say don’t enjoy Valentine’s Day is because they don’t have a significant other to share it with.
One student who would like to remain nameless said she hated the holiday until she met her fianc.
Others feel her pain. “I really hate the holiday, if I don’t have someone special to share it with,” said Krista Herrig, a senior public relations major.
Herrig said she recently “dumped” her boyfriend and will be spending the holiday with her other single friends.
Students are also finding alternative ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
David Bryant, public relations major, said that he has not spent Valentine’s Day with a girlfriend in a few years. “I spend it with my mom and sister,” Bryant said. “I usually get them flowers.”
Like Bryant, Laura Diaz, is a public relations major, and she said Valentine’s Day is a day to let your loved ones know they are appreciated. “In my opinion, it is not just about girlfriends and boyfriends,” Diaz said. “It also has to do with family and friends.”
Instead of spending the holiday with a significant other, Deirdre Nunan, journalism major, has an Anti-Valentine’s Party each year. Because of her work schedule, she will not be able to have one this year. Many will be broken-hearted.
The day’s namesake is probably not doing too well, either, as the hearts and flowers fly. “St. Valentine,” Nunan said, “is rolling over in his grave.”
