Student Grocery List: Ramen Noodles, Ramen Noodles, Ramen Noodles. ETSU’s Leadership House has a better way to get good food – SHARE.
For the first time in more than 12 years, the SHARE program will be operating on the ETSU campus.
Students can purchase groceries at reduced prices in exchange for performing two hours of monthly community service. “Students will be getting more than their money’s worth,” says Megan McEntire, a member of Leadership House.
Students can choose from a variety of menus which will be available at the sign-up table. “Students who purchase these reduced-price boxes of food are encouraged to participate in at least two hours of community service,” says Rebecca Surber, leadership house chair for SHARE.
Students, faculty and staff can sign up for the SHARE program Feb. 28 through March 4 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m. in D.P. Culp University Center’s Atrium on the second floor. The starting price for a box of groceries is $18.75 and can be paid by cash or check. Prices will vary according to menu options.
Once ordered and paid for, students can pick up their SHARE groceries at Cherokee United Methodist Church, 2615 S. Roan Street in Johnson City. Groceries will be distributed with a paid receipt one Saturday morning each month from 8:30-9:30 a.m.
Leadership House members heard about the SHARE program from their adviser Lance Alexis. Both Alexis and Surber decided that this would be an excellent regular service project for Leadership House.
The SHARE program will promote healthy food and student involvement in community service, Surber said.
“I do community service often anyway, so this is a great way to save some money doing it,” said Lindsey Tippens, a senior at ETSU and potential SHARE customer.
SHARE will be offered monthly during next fall and spring semesters, as well. “I think this is a wonderful idea for students,” said Jamie Grindstaff, a sophomore at ETSU. “I know I would be willing to give a little of my time, to save a little money on food.”
Leadership House will be the ETSU host for the SHARE program. For more information contact Lance Alexis or Deborah White at 439-5675 or Rebecca Surber at 384-5350.
