Dear Editor,
Liberal bias?
Of course the American media shows liberal bias. America is a liberal nation.
The political philosophy on which America was founded came from the writings of John Locke, who wrote that governments should have the consent of the governed, and that citizens should enjoy the rights of life, liberty and property. This is the philosophy called “liberalism.”
America was the first great liberal democracy.
On the other hand, being pro-war or anti-war has nothing to do with “liberalism.” The question about Iraq is: should American soldiers die in wars where there is no pressing interest of the United States involved? There was a time when the liberals said “yes” and the conservatives said “no.”
But now, to rally for or against President Bush, so called “liberals” and “conservatives” have done a little dance and switched positions. Now the so-called conservatives favor foreign wars and greatly increased government spending, while the so-called liberals favor a balanced budget and states rights.
That’s not philosophy. That’s just politics.
Also, I would like to note that if a few more of the people who oppose the war had bothered to go to the polls and vote in 2000, we wouldn’t be in Iraq today.
