The Lady Bucs tennis team continued their winning ways as they recorded their 12th 7-0 sweep of the season on senior day, defeating former conference opponent UNC-Greensboro Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bucs improve to 20-4 on the season; the first 20-win season in the history of the program.
In doubles action, the Lady Bucs clenched the point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
In the No. 1 position, Sylwia Ziolkowska and Masha Ilina defeated Emily Wade and Sophie Rychlik, 8-2, while Olya Batsula and Tara Byrne defeated Whitney Miles and Lourdes Moran, 8-2 to clench the point. The doubles team of Elena Volobueva and Sandie Knight retired in the No. 3 position with a Greensboro lead of 1-4.
After winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, ETSU dominated Greensboro winning all six of the matches in straight sets.
In the No. 1 position, junior Ilina defeated Wade, 6-0, 6-2, while senior Ziolkowska then dropped Rychlik, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 5 position to give ETSU a 3-0 lead. Byrne then defeated Moran, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 position to clench the match for the Lady Bucs. Sophomore Batsula defeated Erica Zabkar, 6-4, 7-5 in the No. 3 slot while senior Knight defeated Miles, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 2 position. In the No. 6 singles position, Vita Moskaliova defeated Sara Templeton, 6-3, 6-2 to complete the sweep.
With her victory in the No. 2 singles position, senior Knight (29-9) broke the school record of a 28-win season. Freshman Byrne also made history Saturday as she tied the single season doubles record with 27 wins.
The ETSU women’s tennis team’s next match is scheduled for next Thursday, April 13, when the top-seeded Lady Bucs travel to Macon, Ga., for the Atlantic-Sun Conference Tournament.
ETSU will take on the winner of No. 9 Lipscomb / No. 8 Gardner-Webb. The Lady Bucs have already faced both of these teams during regular season play and defeated them, 7-0. The match is set to begin at 11:30 a.m.
