The Lady Bucs struck first and often over the weekend to improve to 2-1-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. First the Lady Bucs downed University of North Florida 4-1 on Thursday. Then the Bucs topped Jacksonville University 4-1 on Saturday to stay perfect at home in conference competition.
The Lady Bucs soccer program was suffering from injuries at the start of the season. Now, players are getting healthy and newcomers are gaining confidence in coach Heather Henson’s system.
Jordan Monty is one of the first-year players to boost this year’s team. Monty netted three goals over the weekend to help lift the Bucs to victory. “I was hurt in the beginning, but now that I’m back . it’s on!” she said. There is not a lot of deception in Monty’s game. “I just go,” she said.
Monty has earned the respect of her teammates by going strong to the goal. “Any time Monty is in the game I’m looking to serve to her because I know she will finish,” Rachel Layer said.
The pair connected for the second goal of Saturday’s match. Layer said she was more excited about her assist to Monty than her two goals on the day.
Layer scored her first career goal against the Dolphins on Saturday and credits the Bucs defense for staying tough. “Our defense is doing unbelievable right now and it is creating more opportunities for the forwards,” Layer said. Meredith Goldman agrees, “Defensively we’ve been working on getting our socks dirty,” she said. Goldman and her muddy outfit were good for a goal and an assist over the two games.
Katie O’Bryan and Emily Fulcher also scored goals for the Bucs over the weekend. Fulcher has been getting more time in the field as Lindsay Metcalf improves as goalie.
Metcalf had eight saves during the two games. The soccer Bucs helped Metcalf celebrate her birthday with the win on Saturday and a spirited spanking at games end.
Depth at the goalie position will increase next week when Erin Bilyeu returns from rehabilitation.
The Lady Bucs will be back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. against conference foe Kennesaw State.
