On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, ETSU student volunteers worked with through-hikers and members of the Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club (TEHCC) to build a new section of the Appalachian Trail. The trail is about 1-mile north of Iron Mountain Gap.
The new section replaces a poorly-graded older section, as part a long term plan to improve the trail in our area.
The TEHCC coordinates all the improvements on a 130-mile section of the Appalachian Trail along the Tennessee and North Carolina border.
The entire 2,200-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail is maintained by volunteers.
Kevin O’Donnell, director of the ETSU environmental studies minor, arranged this trip with Bob Peoples and Ed Oliver of the TEHCC.
More trips will be arranged during the school year. ETSU interested in participating, can contact O’Donnell at 439- 6679 or at odonnell@etsu.edu.
