Dear Editor:
Since a few other people have taken the time to vent a little about this campus, I figured I’d do the same thing.
First off, kudos to you William! I totally agree with you. The students at ETSU have become so lazy it’s pathetic. It won’t kill anyone to walk a whole 10 minutes to class. Students have also become rude and inconsiderate.
I remember when I first started here, people would actually hold the door for other students and when a group was walking on the sidewalk, they would make room for a single individual who was walking in the opposite direction. It always astounded me how polite people were to each other, and so I came to expect this from most of the students that come to ETSU. (because in all honesty it doesn’t take that much effort to be polite).
Now, if I even dare risk walking on the sidewalk, I’m liable to get pushed off by a group of students who are too self-centered to make any room for me to walk. What’s happened here? Are future generations really being brought up to be less respectable to other people?
When I came to college, I thought I was done with all the high school immaturity but for some reason within the past two years, this immaturity has migrated to ETSU. I’m not asking someone to lay a coat down over a mud puddle for me, I’m just asking people to be more considerate.
Which brings me to my next topic . smokers. Now, I don’t care if you smoke, that’s your choice, but there is a reason I don’t smoke. So, I don’t want to be inhaling clouds of secondhand smoke just to enter a building. The rules of the campus are that all smoking is to be done AWAY from the entrances of buildings. This can be viewed at: http://www.etsu.edu/VUB/drugandtobaccofree.pdf.
And this doesn’t mean like two or three feet away from the door, this means smoke on the sidewalk! Again, quit being lazy! It’s not my problem if it’s raining and you want to stay dry smoking. You make the choice to get wet whenever you decide to light that cigarette. So I shouldn’t be made to have an asthma attack because of it.
When I walk through campus and I just get so disheartened because I’m watching our future and how rude these people are going to be when they get out into the real world. I just hope you people really start to re-evaluate how you act because being lazy and inconsiderate won’t get you very far in life.
