“Opera Grande: An Evening of Opera Scenes” will be presented at East Tennessee State University Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall.
The program of scenes from the operatic repertoire will have something for everyone, even the first-time opera-goer.
Scenes are taken from Bedrich Smetana’s “The Bartered Bride,” Giacomo Puccini’s “Suor Angelica,” Gian Carlo Menotti’s “The Old Maid and the Thief” and Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” as well as Mark Adamo’s “Little Women,” a new opera that premiered in Houston earlier this year.
All will be performed in English with the exception of “Suor Angelica,” which will have translations projected.
The ETSU Opera Theatre gives student singers/artists experience on the lyric stage and allows them to study opera, operetta, musical drama and all of the skills required for the craft.
The Opera Theatre stages a full opera or program of lyric scenes each semester with a cast of students and faculty, enabling the students to gain valuable stage training while providing the community with an enriching artistic experience.
