Student members of the Initiative for Clean Energy (ICE), Students Taking Action in Darfur (STAND) and the East Tennessee State University bicycling team will hold a Save Darfur Mountain Bike Race on Saturday, April 5. All proceeds will go to the organization Save Darfur (on the Web site www.savedarfur.org) to help end the deaths and displacement in that African nation.
The events will take place on ETSU mountain bike trails, and competitors will meet at the Southwest Avenue parking lot side of the trails.
Registration, beginning at 8 a.m., is $50 for teams of four and $10 for individuals. Events include:
Cross Country Race, 9 a.m. until noon: Teams of four will register as novice, intermediate or advanced and will compete “relay” style, with each member completing the two-mile lap five times.
Slalom practice, all morning until qualifying.
Slalom Qualifying, 1 p.m.: The course is just past ETSU Central Receiving and Shipping facilities. Participants will be sent down the trail at one-minute intervals, then timed and paired in either novice or advanced class.
Slalom Race, after qualifying ends until 6 p.m.: Pairs will compete.
Down Hill practice, approximately 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m.
Down Hill Race, from 5 p.m. until completed: Individuals compete as novice or advanced riders. Participants are sent down the trail at one-minute intervals and make two attempts.
