Last weekend “Rocky Horror Live!” went through it’s first run this year at the Johnson City Community Theatre. It was a weekend packed full of laughs, goodie bags and musical numbers. The audience participation was constant, creating a lively atmosphere across the show as the performers interacted back with the audience.
“The first weekend was definitely a success,” Director of “Rocky Horror” Sarah Shanks said. “Saturday night’s sold out house was astounding. This is what we like to see. A full audience who is engaged and enjoying the show.”
“Rocky Horror” got off to slow start opening night with ticket numbers dwindling, but anyone that had a ticket reserved showed up and more outside of reservations attended. The numbers for “Rocky” picked up throughout the weekend hitting a top mark for Saturday.
“Thursday was slow, but that is typical for any show,” Shanks said. “Saturday was a sold out crowd with 170 seats filled, and we had around 330 patrons across the whole opening weekend.”
The box office performance for “Rocky” throughout the weekend was on par with last year’s performance as the sales numbers coming in so far are fairly close.
“Ticket sales for this year compared to last year are pretty steady for opening weekend with both opening weekend performances having a sold out show on Saturday night,” Shanks said.
With the attendance numbers and audience reception looking promising, the theater is looking toward the next weekend for higher sales numbers.
“We expect attendance numbers to continue to climb for the next weekend,” Shanks said. “Word of mouth is one of the best marketing tools for live theater. Once people hear how good it is, we expect people to start to purchase more and more tickets.”
