The TED Taco-thon was held on campus on March 10 as students gathered at the D.P. Culp Student Center to learn new ways to improve the environment.

Hosted by the EcoNuts, the TED Taco-thon is held monthly. Students can receive free tacos and enjoy multiple TED Talks on sustainability and eco-friendly topics.

EcoNuts coordinator Madison Rose helped put together this event, which she sees as a chance to educate students.

“The goal of these events is to educate students on a sustainable topic, where they can use what they learned to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle,” Rose said. “We hope to continue these events in the future while focusing on different topics within sustainability, such as food waste and fast fashion.”

The tacos are what bring the students in, but the TED Talks are what keep them engaged. With the topics being about sustainability, the EcoNuts provide a variety of TED Talks, including some from speakers Lauren Singer, Olivia Tyler and Michael Green. A strong voice in the Ted Taco-thon was EcoNut Megan Stipes, who helped put the event together.

“The people who were here definitely wanted to talk with us about what’s going and what changes they wanted to make in their lives,” Stipes said. “We covered sustainable methods in everyday life, like we had a woman talk about living a zero waste life where she makes her own products.”

The TED Taco-thon isn’t the last stop for Stipes and the EcoNuts, who want to continue the discussion on sustainability and environmentally-friendly methods through fun and different experiences.

The next TED Taco-thon will take place on April 2 at the Culp Center in room 219. On April 17, the EcoNuts will host a tie-dye event celebrating Earth Month during the Farmers Market happening on the Pride Walk.
