ETSU’s softball team played a doubleheader against North Carolina Central on March 21, in which the visiting Bucs split the two-game series with one win and one loss.

Starting off with a strong lead in game one, the Bucs held their own, winning by a score of 8-0. ETSU created a gap early on, scoring three runs in the third inning.

Despite the winning results of game one, the Bucs eventually lost their four-game winning streak to NC Central during game two of the afternoon.

“I think the team was pretty confident and maybe that was a little bit of our issue, maybe we got a little too overconfident,” said ETSU softball head coach Brad Irwin. “I’m not one hundred percent sure if that’s it, but I think they’re still confident, they know that we didn’t play well in game two, they know we can bounce back from that. We’ve had a good start to the season, we’re playing well overall, we just had a bad game in that game.”

With a final score of 8-7, the Bucs put up a fight, but they eventually fell to the Eagles.

“We didn’t pitch well in game two,” Irwin said. “We gave up too many hits, too many runs for sure. We had one big swing at the bat with a grand slam, but we didn’t make adjustments to their two pitchers. The longer we saw them, we didn’t continue to make adjustments and didn’t get quite enough done at the plate.”
