After earning a third place finish at the Stitch Intercollegiate Tournament April 9 and 10, the ETSU Buccaneers’ men’s golf team found momentum heading into the Southern Conference Tournament. Head coach Jake Amos and his team managed to best nine other teams throughout the two day event, finishing 38-under-par (826) while netting a season-record 54-hole total as a unit.

Amos touched on the team’s success, acknowledging personal performances.

“Overall, it was definitely a positive performance,” Amos said. “We made a lot of birdies and we didn’t make many mistakes. The main thing is, we had all five guys play well every single day. All five guys finished under par for the tournament. It was a big positive for sure.”

Archie Davies (Carlisle, England) finished the tournament 11-under-par, securing back-to-back top-10 performances in just under a month for the redshirt-freshman.

“I’ve been playing really solid,” Davies said. “I feel like my game’s in good shape. I was actually pleased this week because I putted better than I did when I got the top 10. It’s just really good to get the putter back and I’m definitely confident.”

Amos, in his third year coaching at ETSU, touched on Davies’ early career successes.

“He’s shown that he can handle that pressure and he can perform,” Amos said. “There’s no doubt about his capabilities. He’s already shown what he can do this year.”

And though the third place finish is a step in the right direction, Amos admits that he and his team have had their eyes on the prize — a Southern Conference Championship.

“We expect to win it,” Amos said. “We’ve slowly been getting into form. My expectations are obviously to win, but we can only do that if we do all the little things well.”

The Southern Conference Tournament is scheduled to take place April 19-20 in Greensboro, Georgia.

“We have to look over our golf ball and be disciplined,” Amos said, looking towards the tournament. “If we do all of those things, we’ll win it.”
