The D.P. Culp Student Center is expected to have all renovations finished before the fall 2021 semester, three years after its initial groundbreaking.
The ballroom was completed at the end of the spring 2021 semester and will be open to all students and student organizations.
The last major renovation is in the Student Media Center. The radio station will be moving into the space before next semester starts.
COVID-19 restrictions will be loosening on the building in the fall.
“Any space that can hold more than a 100 people will be limited to 50% of what its normal capacity is,” said Leah Adinolfi, associate dean of students. “So, for example, the auditorium typically holds around 900 people, and that’s such a large number. We’ll be limiting to about 50% of that. That will be about 450 people.”
For spaces that hold less than 100 people, they will allow up to 80% capacity.
A spreadsheet is available to the ETSU community that lists the capacity limits and all the guidelines, which are expected to change after graduation.
The increased capacity limits are expected to increase student presence and involvement in the building.
“I definitely think we’ll see more student groups meeting in-person in the building, having events in the building, all of those kinds of things,” said Adinolfi. “From student activity center side of things, we will be hosting activities. Things that have been weekly staples before will come back in the fall.”
For example, someone from the barbershop will be stopping by once a month, again. Music and entertainment will also be prominent. They are currently working with students in the bluegrass department to create private session performances. The Cave will be a big hub for these events, and it will be home to esports intercollegiate tournaments.
