With the holidays just around the corner and cold weather already descending onto campus, movie season has started. Cuddle up with a pet, friends or that special someone and watch something new! Here are three seasonally spooky movies that you may have not seen yet to get you in the mood for Halloween.
“Perfect Blue” (1997) is the perfect movie for you if you love anime, or maybe just want to dip your toes in. This psychological thriller bends and warps reality in ways that keeps the viewer engaged and looking for the truth the entire run time. Beautiful animation and color palette helps add to the haze of the plot.
The story follows a young pop idol as she becomes an actress and loses herself in her new career. “Perfect Blue” incapsulates the stress of being famous in a dark and twisted way, including stalkers, hallucinations, betrayal and acts of violence. You’ll have to watch “Perfect Blue” multiple times to get the full effect, and each time, there’s something new to realize, a new warp in reality that you don’t catch the first time around.
“Perfect Blue” is available to view on YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Google Play. Be sure to pay mind to the content warnings.
“The Evil Dead” (1981) is a classic in its own right, the first of the “Evil Dead” series. This original version was filmed right in ETSU’s backyard, a cabin located in Morristown, Tennessee.
The movie follows a group of college students on a vacation to a remote cabin, where their fun takes a terrible turn. This horror/splatter film gained reputation for its famous cellar scene. Rewatching this movie on or near campus is sure to bring an added level of creepiness when you realize how close to home this movie was filmed; a mere hour away.
A remake of the movie was released in 2013. The new version really amped up the special effects and horrific visuals, looking much more terrifying than the original.
“The Evil Dead” is available to watch on HBO Max, YouTube, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV. The content warnings on this one should be highly considered.
“His House” (2020) is a relatively new release. This horror thriller, which received a 100% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes, follows a young refugee couple from South Sudan and their struggles adapting to their life in England. Haunted by not only their life in Sudan, but the treacherous journey to get to England, the couple works to assimilate into their new home.
With cinematography that can only be described as eerie, with the knowledge that this story is similar to many real ones, this movie truly encapsulates the viewer. The ending of “His House” is truly the masterpiece of the film, a mending of broken history and family ties. Everyone should watch this movie to truly understand a perspective outside their own.
Available on Netflix, the content warnings includes violence, abduction and racism.
