On Sept. 17, students and faculty were able to attend a performance led by Dr. Chih-Long Hu in the Martin Center. The Martin Center hosted a “Guest Artist” recital open to whomever wanted to attend. Dr. Hu performed on the piano and was able to show the crowd not only his skill, but express his story through his music.

Dr. Hu used to be a faculty member of ETSU, but he currently teaches piano at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Dr. Hu is a world-traveled performer who has won many awards throughout his career. Dr. Hu is a well taught pianist and is thrilled to continue teaching future generations.

Dr. Hu was very well received throughout his performance, and he expressed his appreciation for being given the chance to perform at the newly updated performing arts center. The audience seemed to be very engaged and appreciative throughout Dr. Hu’s performance, confirmed by his three coaxed encores. Each encore, Dr. Hu’s performance seemed to have different tempos, meaning he was conveying different messages to his audience through his music.

Cindy Godwin, one of the university’s event coordinators, said, “I am not able to comment on what he was trying to convey or express to his audience, that would be something the performer would need to answer for himself.”

As an audience member, you’re able to take in the music and relate the melody to your own life or points of view.

Throughout the rest of the semester, there will be other exceptional artists performing, and Godwin would like to express to all students and faculty to “stay informed and be on the lookout for any new information on upcoming performers.”

Having a full crowd won’t only encourage the performer, but in attending these performances you will gain a sense of inspiration to possibly do something artistic as well.
