On Saturday, Sept. 25, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., ETSU hosted Yoga on the Yard outside on the lawn of the Center for Physical Activity, concluding the celebration of National Yoga Month on campus.
The event began with Franny Chung, a dual degree graduate student at ETSU, leading attendees in relaxing stretches, preparing their bodies for physical activity.
Chung started practicing yoga around 2010/2011 and decided to get officially certified as an Intensive yoga instructor in 2019.
Chung fluently instructed those on body placement, what pose to segue into and even left some of the position choices up to those participating, allowing them to feel what is personally comfortable for each individual.
“I don’t think that there’s any one particular type of yoga that is necessarily beneficial for people,” Chung said. “I think that different types of yoga speak to different people, or even different types speak to the same person along a different period of the day or maybe a different season, even a different mood and mindset.”
Though the pandemic posed difficulties for in-person meetings, Chung shared a positive outlook on how an online environment affected the yoga community.
“It was difficult, because you can’t share that energy with other people, and that’s something that’s really special about a yoga class,” said Chung,”but at the same time, it made it easier to just practice ad-libbing at your own pace at home, and also being able to connect with a greater variety of people across the country or across the world through virtual yoga classes was just fun, too.”
The CPA holds virtual and in-person yoga classes. Check out this link for a schedule of their upcoming group fitness events through Oct. 8, and follow Campus Recreation on social media to keep up with their buzz!
