Dear World will be coming to campus with on Oct. 6, with an open photoshoot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by live storytelling and a photo reveal at 6 p.m.

“Dear World has been around for a number of years and has been on dozens and dozens of college campuses, and I have seen their work and how powerful the experience is for students and for faculty and staff,” said Joy Fulkerson, Director of Leadership and Civic Engagement. “The Dear World experience just made sense as a way to encourage and support and facilitate our students’ stories being told and shared.”

Students will have the opportunity to attend a photoshoot session where they can have a personal message written on their body and get high-quality photos taken of themselves.

The organization will also help students craft their personal story before they take the picture, and the messages can be as simple or as emotional as each student wants.

“I met a girl from University of Central Florida who had a friend that wrote songs, and he had died in car accident. She wrote lyrics to his songs on her fingers for her picture, so it’s just like special things like that,” said Hannah Smith, an ETSU Student who attended the event at an orientation leader conference in 2019.

Both students and the campus will have access to these photos to use for personal and public use.

Students can expect to see these pictures populating campus and social media starting Oct. 5, as the private event attendees begin to receive their photos.

“Our students have some really incredible stories, and we all come from varied backgrounds and have had varied experiences. I am hopeful that students will feel that this is a space and a place where they can share their stories and that in sharing those stories, we are all able to respect one and other and respect the story that each of us has,” said Fulkerson.
