I got my name legally changed last Thursday, so to celebrate, I went out for coffee at a favorite local coffee shop, “Pike House,” and spent a couple of hours de-stressing and enjoying the good drinks and ever-intriguing building they are located in.
If you’ve ever wanted to indulge in dark academia fantasies, Pike House is the place to go. Tucked away from the rest of Johnson City, Pike House is one of the many businesses at Burlington Park, supposedly the most haunted building in the area.
Owned by Greg Schmid and staffed by some of the nicest workers I’ve ever met, Pike House is the perfect place to study or relax after finals.
When you walk in the door, you are greeted by one of the workers almost immediately. If there’s a line, you can explore a little bit of their main room, where antiqued coffee machinery is housed on one side and a small sitting area filled with books on the other.
The pricing is decent, ranging from $3.50 for a small coffee to about $5.00 for my personal favorite, Lotus drinks.
The Lotus drinks are kind of niche and difficult to explain, though they’re somewhat like an iced tea if flowers were used instead of tea leaves. My girlfriend’s favorite is the brown sugar latte (their signature drink) and it’s delicious as well. A bit too sweet for my taste.
They don’t have a lot of options in the way of food. However, they do have muffins and donuts. I’d write a newspaper article just about those muffins.
Pike House is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., except on weekends when they close at 5 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. They are located at 2203 McKinley Rd in Johnson City, Tennessee, 37604, and their phone number is (423) 737-6085.
