Tipton Gallery is currently exhibiting “America Unraveling” from the group Zero Space Collective. The exhibition will conclude May 6, following the closing reception that will last from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“’What is America like?’ is a huge question, but when a global event like Covid-19 happens, your world becomes much smaller. In a nutshell, “America Unraveling” is a visual narrative through the events surrounding the first year of the pandemic,” stated Brooke Day, curator of “America Unraveling.”

The Zero Space Collective transpired in response to the pandemic and the lack of connection that resulted from it. The five founding members decided to form the collective when they lost the resources that graduate school gave them before the pandemic. The idea behind the name is that struggling artists can come together to share and create with space again.

“Zero Space Collective was born because a group of graduate students trying to make art found themselves with zero space to create or to share their creations, so we made our own,” stated Day.

They chose Tipton Gallery because of its rectangular shape, which allowed the narrative of the artwork to flow coherently. The exhibit has been structured so that when viewers enter, they will follow the work on the left wall, view the video in the back and continue to follow the work along the opposite side. The exhibit includes mediums such as paintings, printmaking, photography, ceramic and found object sculptures, as well as audio and video.

“Finding and maintaining your community is a labor of love. When you find the people you want to spend your time with, make the effort to build each other up, go to each other’s shows, be accountability buddies, and if nothing else, find a spot where you can meet up often and laugh over a beer and a basket of french fries,” stated Day.

The exhibit will be open to the public by appointment until after the reception on May 6. For more information about the event, visit https://go.activecalendar.com/etsu/site/arts/event/america-unraveling-at-tipton-gallery/ or https://www.etsu.edu/cas/art/galleries/tipton.php
