Welcome back! I am so excited to be back on campus for the 2022/2023 school year and hope all of you are as well. Last semester, I began writing stories on true crime. This year, with the blessing of our editor, I will be focusing on true crime! We will cover crime near and far, the developments within the cases, rulings, suspicious deaths and more.
In the stories done last semester, we talked about Elizabeth Holmes and the Murdaughs. This fall, I have updates for you regarding all of those cases, convictions in one and several indictments, including one for murder in the other.
This editorial piece will serve as your twice a week informative, educational and entertaining read. I want to start out the semester by telling you a few ways that you can learn more about true crime, ethical storytelling of such and how to find good methods of this entertainment to help you practice self-care this fall. Ethical storytelling of true crime is a new vocalization of protecting the dignity of the victims and their families in today’s highly engaged, highly inquisitive society.
You can tell if someone is ethical or not by the way they talk about the victim and their lives and in the way they present the case. It is never OK to present pictures or personal information that is irrelevant to people. The goal is to tell the story without taking the dignity or degrading the individual. I will work to make sure all of my stories focus on the crime itself, the perpetrator and the justice being served or petitioned for.
This fall, we will be back full sprint after several years of COVID-19 having people in and out of school. In this endeavor, it is bound to get stressful. True crime is a favorite of mine, and I like to watch, listen and read about it. I am a Criminal Justice and Psychology major, so the mind and crimes hold significant interest for me. Here are a few of my favorites: on Youtube, Kendall Rae, Bailey Sarian, on Podcast, Murdaugh Murder Podcast, Crime Junkies and to read, Fitznews or any true crime novel. Have a great start to school!
